Good afternoon golfers,

It has been a quiet week at the Club as thecourse was closed on Monday and Tuesday as thefairways were flooded, the cold weather the pastcouple of days has been a real shock to thesystem. Please note there is now a trolley andbuggy ban in place and following message hasbeen sent out by the Course Committee.

Course news

BUGGYBAN -

All Buggies with the exception of DisabledMembers who hold Blue Badges. In an effort tokeep the course open it is considered necessaryto ban Buggies and Trolleys from the course witheffect from Friday 15th January and untilfurther notice. The worst areas of the courseare the narrow access points which are sufferingfrom the continued use of Trolleys and Buggieschurning up the ground and making muddy ruts andpools. This ban will be under continuous reviewand will be lifted as soon as conditions permit.

TROLLEY BAN -

If you are a registered as having an exemptionto trolley bans you will receive a separatemessage confirming you are exempt from thecurrent ban. If you do not receive a separatemessage but wish to apply for exemption, pleasecontact the Secretary's Office. If you are doingthis you must have a current certificate orletter from your Medical Practitioner supportingyour request.

Tour news

In Sunnier climates, on the USPGA Tour, JordanSpieth showed no sign ofletting up in 2016, starting his season with anincredible 8 shot victory finishing anunbelievable -30 in the Hyundai Tournament ofChampions at the Plantation Course, Kapalua,Hawaii. (1 short of Ernie Els record set in2003). This is his seventh win as a Pro in 77starts, and after his exploits last season (theMasters, U.S. Open, five wins, the FedEx Cup) itwill be interesting to see if he has started howhe means to go on. It is worth mentioning thisvictory also tied him with Tiger Woods for themost victories on the Tour by the age 23, thoughit should be noted Tiger Woods won 18 times inhis first 77 starts and recorded 7 wins in hisfirst 38 starts which shows how much hedominated in the early stages of his career.

Rules section

2016, sees a significant change to the rules ofgolf with introduction of the Anchoring ban, itwill affect a few people this year includingmembers at Peterborough Milton. Please see belowsome selected details form the R&A website. This will cause a few people some problems, ifyou need some help making the transition pleasedo not hesitate to come and see us in the shopas we will be happy to help.

14-1b Anchoring the Club

In making a stroke, the player must not anchorthe club, either "directly" or by use of an"anchor point."

Note 1: The club is anchored "directly" when theplayer intentionally holds the club or agripping hand in contact with any part of hisbody, except that the player may hold the clubor a gripping hand against a hand or forearm.

Note 2: An "anchor point" exists when the playerintentionally holds a forearm in contact withany part of his body to establish a grippinghand as a stable point around which the otherhand may swing the club.

Explanation#1 - Basis for Prohibition on Direct Anchoringof Club

Q. Rule 14-1b provides that, in making a stroke, the player must not directly anchor the club. What is the basis for this prohibition?

A. A stroke is a fundamental element thatdefines the game of golf and is meant to involvethe player freely swinging the entire club atthe ball. Anchoring the club relieves the playerfrom making a free swing by restricting themovement of the club as if it were physicallyattached to the player's body and therebyproviding extra support and stability for thestroke.

Tip of the week

This week the course has been shut for two days, whilst it has re-opened it is still very wet, sowhy don't you take a carry bag and a few clubsand practise using your imagination to creatingsome shots with a limited number of clubs. Forexample, you can try closing the face andhitting a draw/ hook with a mid to long iron toincrease distance, if you're in-between clubstry gripping down the club and hitting a threequarter shot to take some distance off the shot, you may be amazed with how accurate you can be.

It wasn't that long ago a certain JuniorOrganiser had his best round of the whole yearin the rose cup (3 club competition), so youwill be amazed what you can achieve with alimited number of clubs. I would maybe notsuggested using a 3 iron out of the bunkers likeSeve.

Not only will you be helping your golf game butyou will also be helping protect our golf courseready for spring.

Let us know how you get on!
