With the greens running swiftly it is essentialthat your speed is good. Nothing worse than notgetting the speed of the greens early in yourround and being left to hole lots of 5/6 footputts to keep your score going. To help improveyour speed or pace we first need to understandwhat controls this. What do you do when thegreens are fast as opposed to slow? If theanswer is hit the ball softer or harder for slowgreens, then you are probably someone thatstruggles with your speed. Next question is howdo you control speed? Length or your stroke orspeed of the stroke? The best putters that youwill ever see have a constant rhythm to theirputting stroke, and they change the length oftheir stroke depending on the speed of thegreens, they NEVER hit the ball harder or soft. The reason they don't is one; it's verydifficult to have consistent speed and secondly,it becomes very hard to control the club facealignment, which is the key factor to gettingthe ball on line.
This week, before you go out to play take a tipfrom Ben Crenshaw,(I hope you have all heard of this Professional,if you haven't please google him!) he gave thistip to a very young Tiger Woods, grip the club just tight enough that the puttercan't fall out of your hands. This is a lightgrip pressure, what does this feel like? Well, take your dominant hand and roll some ballstowards a hole with just one hand on the putter. You will get a real sense of the weight of theputter. Now go back to two hands and roll someballs on the green towards a hole with thefeeling that putter head is doing all the work. You will be amazed how well the ball will rollswith such little effort. For most people thiswill produce a longer and smoother puttingstroke. Remember everyone is individual and willnever look alike, if you need any help or advisepleaselet us know as we are always look forwardto helping you enjoy better golf.
