Good afternoon Golfers,
Firstly we have to start with last week'sMasters, and what an incredible event it was! Tosee Danny Willett win, following in Sir NickFaldo's footsteps some 20years ago. He playedsome great golf, under the most intense pressureto capitalise on Jordon Spieth's mistakes. Whatstood out to me was, his focus on each shot, ensuring he was giving himself the bestopportunity to hit a great shot. His tee shot onthe 16th, after playing partner Lee Westwoodchipped in on the hole before for eagle, wasincredible and I think his tee shot on the 18th(where he started his whole routine again afterbeing put off by an 'over excited' member of thecrowd) showed us the importance of having aconsistent, structured routine.
Adam and I both played in the Northants countyPro Am on Wednesday, the weather was fantasticand the course was in good condition. We bothfaired ok Adam had 73 finishing 6th and I had 74finishing 9th, the winner was Dan wood with 69.Adam's round included a triple bogey, and I hadtwo double bogies- on one of those I can safelysay my pre shot routine/focus was to blame.

This week we are going to talk about grippressure, and why is grip pressure so important. If you watched the masters last week you willhave seen some players have a meltdown or two,not to mention Ernie Els 6 putts on the openinghole. Also Rory McIlroy & Jordon Spieth, itlooked like a routine victory for Jordon Spiethuntil the disaster on the 12th Hole, perhaps itcould Rory McIlroy was trying too hard So whatcan cause these meltdowns, obviously thepressure of playing in the Masters or in yourown Masters whether it be a monthly medal, theclub championship, a Pro Am and so on, can anddoes affect all of us. Under pressure we all getnervous and learning to control those nerves isoften the difference between a champion and arunner up. Nerves often cause us to tense up andgrip the club too tightly. If we grip the clubtoo tight we lose one of our 4 power sourceswhich is the wrist hinge. When the body losespower the brain then decides to try and createthe power that is missing by throwing the bodyat the ball, causing a decrease in balance andtiming often resulting in a lack of control anda loss of distance.
So what is the correct grip pressure? Wellremember everyone is different but a good guidewould be, tight enough that you have control ofthe club face alignment but soft enough thatyour wrist can hinge.
The last piece of advice and what we see sooften on the lesson tee is golfers that haveworn and shiny grips! You have next to no chanceof gripping the club with the correct grippressure with grips like these and you will betaking yards off your drives. Do your clubs needa spring clean, is it time for some new gripsready for the new season. Thisweekend only get 8 clubs re gripped and get3 grips for free.
