JuniorReport

Congratulations to Milton Junior C team whonarrowly triumphed in a tense and very closefought match with Greetham Valley last weekend.Great performances all round from JadeRoberts, LisaJohnston, AdamO'Brien and man of the match KaiRaymond. The team now travel toNuneaton Golf Club for the next round of thisnational knockout competition. The A and B teamsplay their first round matches next month - goodluck to all of you.

Milton's Robin Williamscontinues to make great strides at college inthe USA. Robin won theAmerican Junior Golf Association All-Star 12-15boys' championship at 'The Virtues' golf clubOhio at the weekend. On a tough Standard Scratch72 course he shot gross 71 and 70 to finish 3under par and beat a field of 78 players after a3 way sudden death playoff with a birdie. Hisfinal round included 6 birdies! We are veryproud of all you are achieving Robin.

Meanwhile Milton's girls are doing us proud inregional events. Jade Robertshit a great winning score of 43 points in theSilver Division of the latest Shires Junior GolfTour event at Collingtree Park on Sunday. 14year old Jade's handicap willnow come down below 20 - and only a year ago shewas off a handicap of 45, a remarkableimprovement. Jade has alsobeen picked for the County Girls Team againstWarwickshire next month, very well done Jade.

In the Diamond Division at Collingtree, which isplayed over nine holes, another Milton risingstar, 11 year old Emily Horstedtook fourth place on 30 points (yes that'sright, 30 points for 9 holes!).

Finally it's great to report that Adamcurrently has 30 youngsters attending juniorlessons on Saturday afternoons and we'd like tosay a big thank you to all the members forbearing with us on the occasions we use thedriving range, practice ground and putting greenfor these sessions which Adammakes great fun. Look out Robinand Jade there are some verypromising youngsters coming through soon tochallenge you!

Tip of the week

This week we are going to talk about short chipshots from close to the edge of the greens, hereat PMGC we have some small green which can leaveyou with tricky chip shots. A lot of peoplestruggle to play these shots consistently, whatwe generally see is people trying to help theball into the air by leaning their weight ontotheir back foot and or flicking their wrist inan attempt to get the ball in the air. Thisnormally results in hitting the ground first orthinning the ball across to the other side ofthe green.

To play chips shots properly and to have bettercontrol of the golf ball, we need to make surethat we understand the club needs to betraveling down and through the golf ball atimpact, brushing the grass just after the golfball. Chipping is very much like putting as wedo not use a lot of wrist action to play theseshots, the only difference is that we play theball middle to slightly back in our stance withroughly 70 percent of our weight on the backfoot, this helps us to get the club travelingdown into the golf ball.

Try this next time you're practising yourchipping, take your setup and now take yourright hand (for right handed golfer) off theclub. From here you will notice that your handis in front of the golf ball, now try and playsome chip shots with just your left hand only. The key to this exercise is to keep your hand infront of the ball as your play your shot.Practise this with a few balls every time youpractise chip shots and you will be amazed howcrisp you shots become and how much better yourdistance control becomes.

If you still have a few problems or would likesome advice please contactus and we will be happy to help you playbetter golf.
