Good afternoon golfers, I hope you are all welland playing some good golf.

Dustin Johnson's victory in the US Open wassomewhat surrounded in controversy, where afterthe round he was given a 1 shot penalty forbeing found to cause his ball to move. I am surea lot of you have seen the video footage of thisand find it as baffling as I did. I wonderwhether the penalty would have stood if he onlywon by 1 shot? It must have been difficult forthe chasing pack and for the leader, as nobodyknew what score was leading, the golf DustinJohnson produced during the final round(especially the last hole!) made him a veryworthy winner!

Tip of the week

This week's tip is about pitching practice.

A lot of golfers struggle to pitch the ballproperly, firstly due to bad technique andsecondly often because of fear of a bad result, which is either a fat or a thin. Making distancecontrol next to impossible. So what generallyhappens is people take a 7 or an 8 iron and tryto run the ball low up onto the green. Thistactic is a good one providing there is nobunkers or rough in your way, although at timesdistance control can be tricky.

At PMGC the greens are fairly small and wellprotected with bunkers and semi rough, in orderto save shots round the green we need to be ableto play a shot that flies fairly high and stopspretty quickly upon landing.

Try this drill, when you are at home in thegarden or on the short game area take a long teepeg and push it into the ground so only a littleof the top of the tee is above the grass. Nowmake some practise strokes at the tee peg andnotice where you club contacts the ground.Providing you are not taking dinner plate sizesdivots you can get away with hitting slightlybefore the ball, but ideally we would like tocontact the ground where the tee peg is andbruise the ground after the tee peg. If youcannot hit the tee peg consistently, you willstruggle to be consistent with a ball on theground. This is a great way of helping to buildconfidence and get your pitching back on track.

So practice striking the tee peg until you cancompletely remove it from the ground and youwill be surprised how much better your pitchingstarts to become. Please see the videoon our YouTube channel for moredetail about the setup and technique requiredfor the pitch shot.
