Good Afternoon Golfers, 

It's The Open Championship this week at Royal Troon, the last time The Open was played at Troon was in 2004 and the winner was American Todd Hamilton, I remember him using a hybrid to chip the ball onto the green in the playoff against Ernie Else (more on this below). The last 6 Open Championships at Troon have been won by an American. Will this change this year, let us know who you think will win? Last week we both played in the Glazerite trophy at Wellingborough, unfortunately we both didn't our most consistent golf, plenty of birdies but too many bogies and others! Adam and his team finished tied 5th, I fared better in the individual Pro Am shooting 71 (-1) to finish tied 5th. 

Paul Pateman, Leigh Wynne, Chris Savage and I played in the Northants County Pro Am on Monday in blustery conditions, finishing -11 and in a tie for 6th place. I shot 74 in the individual event, ruing a late double and triple bogey.

Pro's Away Day

Tip of the week- the hybrid bump and run 

This week we are going to take a look back at Todd Hamilton's Hybrid shot he played onto the last in the play off in 2004. 

We can use this shot from off the green if we have nothing to go over like a bunkers or thick rough. This shot is especially useful if you find yourself with you ball sitting down in a bad like a divot. 

To play this shot we position the ball middle to slightly back in a narrow stance, grip down the club so that you are almost holding onto the club shaft (making the club play similar length to a putter) to give us more control. From here we use a small swing with minimal wrist action, similar to a putting stroke, which travels down and through the ball. The wider sole of the hybrid (compared to an iron or wedge) makes it easier to contact the ball cleanly, especially from bad lies. The result is a low running shot that will roll up onto the green. 

Give this some practise and you can maybe emulate Tod Hamilton on the last hole at Troon. This shot will help you reduce your shots around the greens especially when you see faced with a difficult lie.
