What a spectacle
The 145th Open Championship, at Troon was last week, the quality of golf on show was incredible. Henrik Stenson's 3 shot victory in a stunning display of golf. The last rounds played by Henrik Stenson and Phil Mackeson will surely go down as some of, if not the best final rounds in a major ever. A cool Swede and the fan favourite Phil, produced some of the finest golf ever witnessed in any era. JB Holmes in 3rd place was 11 shots behind 2nd place and 14 shots behind the Winner. I think this shows just how good the top 2 were! Henrik Stenson broke many records in en-route to his win, tying lowest round in Major history, his 264 lowest aggregate score in a Major Championship.
Nicknamed the "Iceman" it was clear to see how accurate tis nickname is, birdie after birdie (10 in total during his final round), not giving Phil Mickleson any hope of catching the lead. It was also great to see 2 young Englishmen in the Top 10, Tyrell Hatton who finished T5th and Andrew Johnson (or Beef has he is often referred to, and is fast becoming a popular character in the game) finishing 8th. I think the Open should serve as an inspiration to us all and make us want to get out on to the golf course!

This week we are going to talk about approach shots from firm fairways, after the current hot spell the ground has firmed up that we have gone from lush fairways to firm fairly quickly.
So how do we get under the ball and get the ball into the air?!......... If you agree with this last statement then you haven't seen myself or Andy for a lesson. The loft of the club makes the ball go into the air and if you are trying to help the ball into the air you are going to be disappointed with your results.
The key to playing from firm ground or even bare ground is to strike the ball first and then the ground. There is a couple of changes we can make to insure that your strike the ball and the ground.
1. Move the ball slightly further back in your stance
2. Start with a fraction more weight on your front foot at address
3. Strike the ball down and through the ball trying to contact the ground after the golf ball.
The final key to improving your approach shots is to understand that accuracy is more important than distance. Swing the club in balance with a consistent speed, say 80 percent of your speed will result in more accurate results. Click here to see our video explaining this!
Try and practise this and you will be knocking the flags out in no time.
