Good afternoon golfers,
I trust you are all well and enjoying the golf. I feel it only fair to mention Rory McIlroy winning the Tour Championship and the FedExCup. Both seemed unlikely as he trailed by 3 shots with 3 holes to play, a holed second shot on the 16th from 137 yards and a birdie on the par 5 18th saw him tie for the lead with a final round 64. The 3 man playoff was as exciting as they come but in the end a birdie on the 4th extra hole was enough for Rory to win the Tour Championship and the FedEx. 2 wins in 3 weeks for Rory, has his putting finally improved and can he get back to winning majors?
It wasn't all great news in the golfing world as the legendary Arnold Palmer sadly passed away on Sunday, with 7 Major wins the 'King' will be sorely missed by the golfing world.
Arnold Palmer helped to change the way golf was perceived and I think it's true that golf wouldn't be what it is today without him, 95 career wins and 50 Masters appearances is something that is unlikely to be matched or beaten in the modern game.
The 41st Ryder Cup at Hazeltine starts on Friday, in what promises to be an exciting and interesting weekend.
I think (hope!) the European team will do enough to win the Cup, there has been a lot made of how many rookies are in the team but they are all winners on the European Tour, and have mostly been in good form of late- who do you think will star for the teams?

Milton Northants League Junior Final
The historic all-Milton Northants League Junior Final resulted in a PMGC 1 win (5-1) over PMGC 2 with Vice-Captain Ben Morris leading his team to victory on Sunday 25th September. In a series of close matches, which swung dramatically all afternoon, the final score scarcely reflected how little there was to choose between the two teams.
Northamptonshire Golf allowed Milton to stage the match at home between 6 a-side rather than the usual 4 players to enable everyone in the squad to participate. The game was played in great spirit and the after-match evening awards and trophy presentation was attended by almost 70 people representing the county, the club, and the families of the players involved in all the Junior teams that won their groups and made up 3 of the semi-finalists, in an incredible achievement that is unlikely to be repeated. Both team captains, Ben Morris and Jacob Williams made memorable speeches following the presentation of trophies by Northants Golf Official Jack Marr. Please click here to see a full match report.
Autumn/Winter Range
We have now put out all of our autumn/winter range, fingers crossed as it's a while before we need the beanies, thermals or mittens but we have some fantastic pieces from Under Armour, Galvin Green, Glenmuir and Daily Sports. Please call in and take a look!
New 917 On The Way
The much anticipated new Titleist 917 wood range is due to be released at the end of October, however due to us being a Titleist fitting partner we have taken delivery of the whole demo range.
There will be 3 models of 917 driver:
- 917 D2 - 460cc for maximum distance and forgiveness, as well as a high trajectory
- 917 D3 - 440cc deep face for a forgiving yet workable driver. A deep face allows for the trajectory of shots to be managed, and has a lower flight than the D2.
- 917 D4 - 450cc made only to order, for those that need extreme spin reduction.
Become A Pressure Putter
The Ryder cup starts this week and I thought it would be a good idea to talk about handling your nerves. Whether it's on the first tee or when you're playing really well, you only have a few holes left to have the best round of your life when suddenly you seem to lose the ability to hit the ball or the ability to hole a putt.
So why does this happen - it can be caused by a number of things but quite often it's when you get out of your normal pre-shot routine, or you change your thought process.
This week at the Ryder cup there is going to be lots of really crucial moments that will determine the outcome of the event. Watch how players approach their pre-shot routine especially on the putting green. Watch carefully to see whether or not their routine changes, when they have crucial putt to win or half a hole/the match towards the end of their round.
Try this drill, head to the putting green with your putter and 6 balls. Place them around the hole roughly a putters length away (3-4 feet away). From here try to hit every putt like you were in a competition. Go through your routine and read each putt (line your ball up if this is part of your routine) and try to hole them all in a row. Once you have completed this exercise I would like you to work out if you took any longer on the last few putts than you did on the first few? You may need someone to watch you do this and maybe time you on each putt.
The timing of your routine is something that people tend to overlook, often people slow down and over analyse the situation, or some people do the opposite by getting too quick rushing their shot.
Practice your routine trying to keep your rhythm and timing the same on each putt. By focussing on the process rather than the outcome, this will help you to stay calm and focussed on every putt no matter what the circumstances.
What tends to happen is the thoughts of the outcome are in the front of it mind and the routine is completely forgotten.
Watch the Ryder cup this week and see how they all handle those pressure putts.
