With the forecast being blustery this week, we thought it would be relevant to offer some tips to help you play better in the wind, particularly into the wind.
Quite often people will talk about how they 'move ball way back in their stance and hit the ball harder' when playing into the wind.
However, moving the ball way back in the stance produces a very steep angle of attack which will start the ball lower than normal, but will increase the amount of backspin on the ball dramatically. Causing the ball to climb into wind. Hitting the ball harder, therefore increasing club head speed, which also results in increased backspin. By being able to control the back spin you impart on the ball, you'll find your club selection a lot easier in windy conditions.
Firstly, we need to make a few changes to our address position:
1. Move the ball about an inch or so back in your stance- allowing us to keep the ball lower without imparting too much backspin on the ball.
2. Narrow your stance slightly- this will encourage a slower swing
3. More weight on your front foot at address (roughly 60 percent)- allowing us to control the initial launch of the ball.
The final parts to controlling the ball in the wind are:
1. Take more club than normal (this depends on the strength of the wind)- to allow you to reach the target. Often people don't take anywhere near enough club.
2. Swing the club more smoothly, roughly 70 percent of your 'normal' power- to lower club head speed and reduce back spin
This will take some practise but once you get used to these small changes you will find you have much more control of you golf ball in these blustery conditions.
If you would like any help or advise please don't hesitate to contact us.
