Ryder Cup All we can say is WOW! We hope you have all recovered from the Ryder Cup extravaganza and enjoyed the 3 days of golf as much as we did, it must have been great viewing even for ‘non-golfers’ and can only do great things for the sport we all love. The golf played by Europe for the 3 days was incredible and it was clear after the first morning, there was only going to be one team who looked like they would/wanted to win, there was a very slight wobble early on Sunday but Jon Rahm and Ian Poulter won vital matches!

PMGC - County Junior Champions 2018 It's been another great fortnight for Milton's junior teams in County and National events. Having beaten Peterborough Milton's girls in the semi-final of the Northamptonshire Junior League, our team of Kai Raymond (Captain), Morgan Cresswell, Euan Herson and Harry Smith all faced tough opponents in Kettering at Collingtree Park. It was a tense day with only Kai getting ahead on the front 9 with all the other games too close to call. Around the turn Morgan, Euan and Harry were all trailing in their matches and we were facing an uphill battle. Kai led from the front and eased to a well-deserved 4&3 victory playing solid par golf in tough windy conditions. Morgan battled hard against County player Gracie Murray but headed down 18th one down. Euan produced a chip in and some great up and downs over the closing holes against our very own Chelsey Sharp (whose home club is Kettering) to turn round a 2 down deficit into dormie one up. So the crucial game was Harry and suddenly news came down from the course that he was heading down 17th dormie 2 up having been one down just a few holes earlier. As Morgan was putting out on 18th further news arrived that Harry had won 3 and 1 so with Euan already guaranteed half a point, we were home and dry. Morgan won 18 and Euan lost 18 so both halved their games, the final result being 3 -1 and Peterborough Milton were crowned Junior County Champions for the third time in 5 years, an achievement to be very proud of.

The victory qualified PMGC Juniors to represent Northamptonshire in the Junior Home Nations Knockout, so our winning team headed to the regional qualifier last weekend. They added low handicappers Jacob Williams and Junior Captain Sam Ludlow to the squad as gross scores also contribute to the team score in this 6 person event. Glen Gorse was firm and bouncy with very fast greens that made for a tricky day of scoring, particularly as the format was medal/strokeplay. Early on the team were going like trains, Jacob 1 under gross after 6, Euan 1 under gross after 3, with Morgan and Harry also starting well and Kai and Sam battling hard. Into the back nine and it was Morgan who started firing with 2 birdies in 3 holes to get back under handicap. Kai also battling hard and also under handicap. Harry was last man out and the result was still not certain until he walked down the last, making an amazing par on the 450yd par 4 finishing hole for a nett 66, the best of the day by 3 shots! When all results counted Milton had won by 18 shots!!!! We had 4 out of the top 10 nett scores, Harry (66) Morgan (69) Kai (72) and Euan (74). Jacob’s gross 80 was the 3rd best gross score on a tough scoring day and Sam was up our sleeves had we needed him. We now go to Royal Norwich this Sunday for the semi-finals looking for a place in the televised national final at the end of the month. Watch this space!

Finally the Robert Brown Junior Order of Merit Trophy is too close to call with just the October Medal and aggregate trophies left to count. Kai Raymond, Jacob Williams and Shivani Karthikeyan look favourites but a great score could see others emerge from the pack. Play well everybody, let's finish the season in style!

Scratch league - Wellingborough 8 : 0 PMGC Yes you read that correctly, 8 – 0! A win away at Wellingborough would, in reality, have preserved our Division 1 status. However, they were in exactly the same position and were clearly up for it. I again had to call on players outside of the main squad to play due to late drop outs and despite the fact that the handicap match up was reasonably even, it was going to be a tough ask to get anything from the match. 3 games went to the last hole, Martin Humphries, Nathan Holt and Ian Wicks. Steven Smail lost 16 and 17 to lose 2 & 1, so the whitewash scoreline does not accurately represent the reality. Really a day to forget! We have 1 game left, a win is still likely to preserve our status, 2 teams going down, but we need another result to go our way on the same day! It is not fully in our hands. The last game is against Harlestone at Milton on Sunday 7th October at 10 30. Support welcome. As Captain I would like to feel a bit like Bjorn and not Furyk on Sunday. Man of the Match Sorry guys with an 8 – 0 struggling to find the positives. However I would like to thank Stef Salerno, Martin Humphries, and Steven Smail for playing at short notice and giving their all. Martin Herson

Maintenance update Further to our update and info last Tuesday, I thought I'd give a brief update on the major renovations to the fairways this week. Firstly the fairway scarification to 4 mm depth, followed by verti draining to 5 inch depth , and then overseeding at 35 grams per sq metre . We are trying to keep the disruption to a minimum, removing the debris away from the fairways as quickly as possible. Yes, the fairways look terrible initially but this work will benefit us next year, and keep our course progressing forward. Next week is also scheduled for heavy greens maintenance. The work will involve aeration and sand injection into the greens profile and will commence on Monday. We are always looking to keep progressing to achieve a better composition to the greens profile so 2 tonne per green of sand will be added and overseeding with pure bent grass seed , again please bear with us during this time. This year has been great for golf but not so good for the grass (fairways) but we are winning and will win , I firmly believe that we as a club are moving in the right direction and we will get there soon , thank you for your support and hope to see you at next week’s Course Forum. Stephen Smail - Course Manager

To sleeve or not to sleeve |
Being underprepared when you're out on the course is a blunder which we've all been guilty of making. As the cold weather starts rolling in, you need to start thinking about some layering pieces that keep you warm and dry, but also lets you have freedom of movement during your round. Luckily for you, we have just the answer. |
Under Armour Storm Daytona 1/2 zip Under Armour has given you a perfect solution in the form of this pullover. The stretch panels at the shoulders allow for added mobility in the swing, whilst the double-knit insulation panels pack incredible warmtha and are still soft to the touch. The material also wicks sweat and dries quickly, ensuring a constant body temperature through the whole round. |
|
Under Armour Storm Daytona vest
If you prefer the gilet look, why not try this Storm Daytona vest? It has all the same features as its 1/2 zip counterpart, making for minimal distractions during your round. The three colourway choices are all distinctive and unique in their own right, and add a nice dose of style into the mix. |
