Scratch League- PMGC 4.5 Vs Harlestone 3.5
The last game of a long and difficult season, and a must win to stand any chance of preserving our Division 1 status. We also needed Northants County to beat Kingsthorpe on the same day to make sure! So, a very nervy day expected. All we could do was take care of business at Fortress Milton. I loaded the top of the order with Jay Noye and James Walters, both in form players. They did not disappoint although James had to fight back from 1 down after 13 to win 2 & 1. So a great start and 2 – 0 up. I was in control of my game (4&3) playing No 4 and with Joe Strickett going down 2&1, we still had a commanding 3-1 lead. However, Harlestone fought back! Ian Wicks could not stop a putting machine and went down 2&1. News filtering through that Chris White, playing their +2 man, was down. It was starting to look very close. Tom Burgh, having a very solid season, then brought home a point (4&3) so we had 4 points. However, we need the win. A draw was not enough. The decider was Chris Savage 1up playing 17. A half would be good enough! What does Chris do? 3 putts on 17 and all of a sudden heading down 18 all square and the season on the line! However two solid shots on 18 to 12’, and opponent missing the green left and we starting to breathe easier. Despite a great up and down from Harlestone, a 4 was enough to get the half point and the match win. We then had to wait for the result from Kingsthorpe. Northants County (easily Champions) won 7-1 and thus our Division 1 status was assured. Whilst all games not yet played, we will finish 4th with a record of played 10, won 4, lost 5 and halved 1. We remained unbeaten at home. Many thanks to all who have played this year. It has been frustrating, given the strength we have in the club, to have been fighting a relegation battle, but I cannot fault the effort in all matches. Thank you all. Martin Herson.
