Woodall Spa Trophy PMGC member Jay Noye won the Woodall Spa Trophy in style on Monday by shooting an incredible gross 67 (-6) to win the gross event by 5 and the nett event by 7. The standard scratch was 76 so Jay took 1.2 off his handicap and is down to 1.2.
Scratch League PMGC 6 Vs Staverton 2 The start of a new league was against the promoted Staverton team, who came with a strong line up on paper. Their overall aggregate handicaps were lower than Milton, so it was to be no pushover! After a Henry V/Churchillian team talk and with the rain subsiding, we set off. I had deliberately put out one of our strongest players, Chris Savage, up the top of the order, and he did not disappoint with a 4&2 victory to get us on the way. However, half way round it was looking decidedly dodgy! Quite a few were down, me included and if it was a 9 hole match we probably would have lost 6-2! So fingers pulled out on the back 9 and the tide started to turn. Five out of eight matches went to the final hole! One of our junior stars, Jacob Williams, got an excellent half. Michael Wood came from 3 down to win 1up which was a great fight back. I was 3 down after 8 and struggling, but years of scratch league experience kicked in and I got it going on the back nine. All square down the last and what do I do but stick it in the water! Flying pig award to the opponent who follows me, and my 5 after a drop wins the hole and the match. The result now stands at 3.5 – 0.5 up, lucky really! After Ian Wicks lost 2&1, Phil Hughes came to the last all square. With the opponent looking like making 4, Phil holed an amazing 30ft putt for a birdie 3 and the win. Chris White then followed also all square and made a testing 10ft putt for a half point. Last but by no means least, Adrian Firman was always in control against a plus handicap for a fabulous 5&3 win. So a great start to the campaign. The second match v Harlestone away is not until mid-July. Man of the Match, I’m going to give it Phil Hughes for that 3 at the last to not only win his match but secure the point to give Milton victory. Martin Herson
Adrian's Top 10 finish in The English Seniors Championship Congratulations to Adrian Firman who finished tied 9th in the English Seniors Amateur Championship at Holme Hall. A sparkling 5 birdie 68 in round 1 saw Adrian right in contention. A disappointing finish in Round 2 saw Adrian drop back but a 70 in the final round secured a very creditable top 10 finish. Defending Champion, Worplesdon's Ian Attoe retained his title with a highly impressive 65-72-67 for an eight stroke winning margin. Charles Gunn
