Day 3 was our first look at the Titleist Performance Institute which is where all the tour pros go for equipment and also where all prototypes are tested. After looking around at the ball testing robots and 3D analysis equipment we got put into groups to have their top fitters put us through our paces by fitting each other for a new set of irons and hybrids. They then taught us techniques that they had learned over the years and a couple of different ways to approach fitting. From there, we made our way over to the Scotty Cameron gallery to spend lots of money on limited edition headcovers and putters. Unfortunately, I only got the go ahead from Katy on a headcover as the putters were upwards of £4.5k. Photos were also not allowed so I have got nothing to show from there. Day 4 we were back over to TPI for a metal wood fitting to compare notes with the US fitters on what we like to see when fitting. We then had a meeting with the head of department of the Titleist research and development team to talk about what we feel they may be missing in the European market and give our feedback to help upcoming products. Day 5 was our final day and one that we had looked forward to all week. It was the day that we had a presentation from Bob Vokey on the new SM8 wedge that is coming out early next year. We were lucky enough to be the first group of people in the world to hit the new wedge and I can confirm it was great. They have put some interesting technology into the SM8 which we haven’t seen before, so watch this space. I would also like to add that Bob cleaned my wedge for me (I had to let everyone know that). It was an honour to be part of such an amazing week and thank you to Titleist for the opportunity. I look forward to using these new techniques to further improve my fitting and coaching. Surprisingly even most of the fitters were using wedges with too little bounce. |
