Now we are back on the longer tees, distance off the tee is going to be crucial to make sure you can reach the long par 4's and par 5's. So how can we improve our distance? There are four power sources in the golf swing:
the wrist
arms
body rotation
weight shift
We need to make sure that we utilise all of these in order to hit the ball to our full potential.
I suggest this week that you try making some practice swings with your driver, firstly make sure you are not gripping the club too tightly! Then make a backswing, making sure that you get some weight over onto your back foot, then swing to a full finish as fast as you can, whilst maintaining your balance. You should here a swish of the club at the bottom where the ball should be or just after the ball, with your weight now on your front foot facing the target. Repeat this a few times and then try hitting some balls, without too much attention to the direction of the shot. There is no substitute for club head speed in the golf swing. Next week we will explain how to harness this club head speed and straighten those shots up.
