Adam's Tip of the week
Continuing on from last week, the aim of thisweek's tip is to help you to hit the ballfurther. This week we look at the down swing ortransition move (how we start down from the topof the backswing. Firstly I hope you are now ina better backswing position after last week'stip. Now it is time to use that better backswingposition and start the down swing in the rightsequence.
The transition from the backswing to the downswing is regarded as the key move in golf(biomechanics call this the kinematic sequence).Basically, this is the order in which we startdown from the top of the swing.
The correct order is to initiate the downswingwith a shift of our weight back to our frontfoot, this can be done by feeling like you'regetting heavy into the front foot as you startthe downswing, from there you start to unwindwith the hips, the torso, the arms and finallythe club which is the final bit to move to startthe downswing.
Some of the great players actually start thedownswing before they have finished thebackswing, Rory McIlroy is a great example. Theaim is to increase what's known as the'X-factor' stretch which is the difference indegrees between your hip turn and shoulder turn.By 'clearing' your hips first in the downswing(before your shoulders have completed thebackswing turn) you in increase the amount ofdegrees between the two. This stores more energyinto the club which helps to increase club headspeed
This week I want you to practise this sequencein slow motion so that you can get a feel forthe correct order of the downswing, then once wegave the correct order we can start to build thespeed up. Practise doing this for 10 minutes aday and you will be amazed how you will start tohit the ball further.
This is the key move to hitting the ball as faras you can. Please see photos below of what thecorrect order looks like.
