Adam'sTip of the week
This week after watching everyone play the 9thhole in Beaujolais day yesterday. I would liketo give a tip based on what I observed.
It was cold day with the wind blowing into ourfaces standing on the 9th tee. From the men'stee it was playing 180yards, to what is awell-protected green (ladies somewhere in theregion of 165yards).
What I saw was people trying their best to hitthe ball into the wind hard and more controlledthan they would normally do with no wind. Sothere was two distinct shots that I saw;
1. Push to the right that was generally high andcurving right. 2. Pull long left of the green.
The cause for these shots was the fact that wehad a long par 3 into the wind and golferswanted to make sure they got their ball goingthrough the wind.
1. People put the ball much further back intheir stance and then tried to hit the ballharder into the wind resulting in a ball thatstarted further right than normal (due to thefurther back ball position) and then found thatthe ball actually went fairly high resulting inthe wind getting hold of the normal left toright curve. Shots finished in the bunker atbest leaving a tricky bunker shot.
2. A lot of players tried hard to get theirweight onto their front foot at impact to keepthe ball down, but by doing this so aggressivelypeople 'throw' the club from the top of theswing, this moves the club path to the left andcause a pulled shot to the left of the green (ifthe face is square to the club path).
Remember when playing into the wind the key isto take the backspin off the golf ball, so weneed to take more club and move the ball backslightly in our stance not off the back foot.Then we need to play a three quarter shot toreduce club head speed, resulting in a lower,more penetrating ball flight.
If you get chance to watch a good player in thewind, they make it look so effortless. Thinkback to Tom Watson's near miss at the open backin 2009, he hit the ball beautifully all weeklong in tricky conditions. I can't rememberseeing him swing out of his boots into the wind!
So think three quarter swing, ball backslightly, and smooth swing. Feel is massivelyimportant when playing in tough conditions, byhitting the ball softer you take spin off theball and launch the ball lower which will onlyhelp you control your flight thus your golfball. Justlike this!
Let's make playing in the wind look easy for achange. Booka lesson today to put these tips into practice!
Best of luck
