PGA Fourball Championships

29 August 2024

Last week Sam and I played in the PGA Fourball championships at Carden Park. We had Members Dan Calpin and David Fear on the bags caddying for us both and taking the blame for all the bad shots, which there were a few.

Weather conditions were very windy with gusts of 30mph and on the last morning, we had 40mph winds.

First day we started slowly, making 3 silly bogeys early mainly me 3 putting! Then Sam birdied the 6th to steady the ship. Sam then started rolling the putts in birding the 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th holes allowing us to finish with a 70 -2 for the first day. Looking at the scoring at this point the cut looked like it would be -7 or -8 at a push with the weather conditions.

The second day we knew we needed a good score but in the difficult windy conditions patience and trying not to drop any shots was the order of the day. Sam got us off to a good start by birdieing the second hole, then I hit the flag on the 5th with a wedge dropping to 3 feet for our second birdie of the day, followed by Sam birding the next par 5 for our 3rd birdie of the day and a good front 9 -3.

What was then to follow typifies competition golf, it was fun, stressful, and extremely exciting! I birded the 11th the par 5 then Sam birdied the difficult 13th hole after I had hit my ball out of bounds to add pressure on him, followed by a brilliant eagle from Sam on the 14th. I then birdied the par 3 15th. With a good score going we had 3 tricky holes to finish. Sam made a good par on 16th, 17th had a very strong cross wind. Sam went first and came up short in the bunker, I then followed with a good shot that went through the wind into the back bunker. Both of us hit good short game shots and Sam holed a good 6-footer for par. Off to the 18th with a good score in hand and just a par would be good enough to qualify for the final day. Sam hit his tee shot in the fairway bunker and I found the fairway. Sam managed to hit a good shot just short of the green and I hit a good wedge which again hit the flag and went to 15 feet, which I would roll in for another birdie and finish an enjoyable day in style. A great round and one we will remember for a long time.

The final Day was one that we simply ran out of steam shooting 73 +1 and simply nothing would go in the hole.

A great week and with limited practice for either of us we were very happy to qualify let alone make the cut.

Thanks to Dan & David for all your support and especially to Sam who played some fantastic golf and was the star player this week.

Look forward to playing again next year.
